Googling My Facebook Makes Me Twitter: The Employment Law Implications of Social Networking

Speaker: Sara McGrane,
Felhaber Larson Fenlon & Vogt

Social networking web sites (SNS) have revolutionized how information is disseminated.  As employers, you must consider the legal implications of reviewing information of applicants and current employees.  For prospective employees, 77% of recruiters use Google or Yahoo to check the background of candidates and 78% of companies use social networking sites to find and attract candidates.  Learn the legal implications to using these tools for both purposes.

For current employees, SNS cause a loss of productivity--some employees admit to using Facebook as much as 3 hours per day.  Learn the implications for monitoring employees use of the SNS, as well as how you may use the information you may see on the employee's SNS in their employment.

Learning Objectives:
1.  How may employers use SNS legally in screening potential new employees?
2.  How may employers use SNS legally in monitoring current employees at work and off work behavior?
3.  How may employers use SNS legally when the employee is not searching SNS at work?

This program is approved for 1.0 general recertification credits.
